The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face – Johnny Mathis

This is from the 1972 album of the same title. I read about the song and if the story is true, it makes it even more romantic. I read that it was written by a Scottish man named, Ewan MacColl for his wife and then, recorded about 10 years later. What a lovely man to see that beauty in his wife. What a perfect rendition by Johnny Mathis. No one else could bring this much soul into any song.

    Both Ewan MacColl’s …
Both Ewan MacColl’s parents were Scottish therefore he was – just because you are born in a stable doesn’t make you a horse! Yes he changed his name – to a pen name which expressed his commitment to Scots folk music and the Lallans Scots tongue of which he was a great exponent. Even his songs were influenced by the Celtic musical style and ballads of which he was so fond – this song being an example – see Barbara Dickson’s rendition on youtube. The name Miller is not only to be found in England!

    I did some more …
I did some more research and it appears this song was played in the movie, I learned the following — “There is one odd montage in the middle of the film which is like a music video set to Roberta Flack singing “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” in which the characters Tobie & Garver roam through the landscape and end up in a secluded pond. The use of this two year old song in the film actually propelled it to #1 on the charts and made a star out of the relatively unknown Ms. Flack.”

    I don’t remember …
I don’t remember this song being played in the movie “Play Misty For Me,” but it could have been. I rmember the caller, played by Jessica Walter, called DJ Clint Eastwood making a request saying, “Play Misty For Me,” which meant she wanted the song “Misty” played which he would do.

Johnny Mathis does a simply flawless version of this song. It’s absolutely beautiful. There is no better singer in the world or this lifetime than our dear Johnny Mathis. I knew about the movie. You and I seem to like the same songs. I’m so glad you like this one. As I played it before uploading, I got all teary-eyed. It’s such a lovely rendition of the lyrics. And, as I also said in a comment here, it does sound like a hymn. Right from the soul.
